I was 29 years old when I quit my job. I technically got fired, but it sounds better if you say that you quit.
I gave my wife a heads up that I may be relieved of duty sometime soon. She responded with reassurance which was nice of her. I waited to soften the blow over beers at a shitty bar by our grocery store.
A couple weeks later, the fatal blow was landed at 9am on a Monday. It’s a funny thing to be terminated through a computer.
Whenever I’m at a concert, I’m usually overtaken at some point in the show by the artist’s agency. At their ability to create. The under current of creative expression takes out my footing with ease. But I would faithfully log on to work the following Monday, the fever dream a semi-distant memory.
I read about this actor that got fired from a big consulting firm. He was a movie star is some big super hero movie. The excerpt was a letter he wrote to his former employer. It was well written, but the part that stuck was a singular phrase. It read, “Thank you for doing what I would have never done for myself.”
That phrases procures itself from time to time in my mind. It has been more prominent the past few weeks.
I’ve written about 80% of Concrete Lemon. It’s felt good to write. I’m hopeful it get published. If it does get published, I will feel so satisfied with having a physical manifestation of my creative efforts.
I’d like to give a note of appreciation for my wife, Bailey. When I told her I was no longer employed, her eyes widened, not a little bit, but a lot. She looked down at the coffee table in our living room. But it didn’t take her more than a couple moment to compose and look back up. She knew how dissatisfied I had become.
She has been so steady and supportive in this side quest that there is no proper expression of appreciation. I try my best, but I do not think it suffices. She is such an amazing person and I will forever be indebted to her in the way that she navigated my selfishness.
